But with the multitudes of construction everywhere and the increasing population, I feel that Singapore does not feel as clean and as Green as it used to.

The statistics indeed look impressive, however I do have several questions with regards to Singapore being Green.

1) Conserving Singapore's Biodiversity

It can be seen from many media reports that Singapore has many places to conserve the wildlife in Singapore. But I disagree with a lot of them. I do not see Singapore as a wildlife magnet for the following reasons.

a) Singapore used to be a rain forest and with the multitudes of construction, reclamation and "upgrading" where can you find wildlife?

"Some Sobering Statistics

97 (39%) of all native coastal plants (251) are extinct.

Only 4% of mangroves are left.

26% of all seed plants are extinct and 65% threatened.

25 % of 91 mammals are extinct, 58% of remnant 53 mammals are at risk.

34% of birds are extinct and 38% of the extant residents are at risk. "

I'm at the abandoned sewage works and dumping ground of Lorong Halus. This was once a very rich area of mangrove, rnudflats and ponds adjoining the Serangoon Estuary. During annual migrations, waterbirds in their tens of thousands used to swarm here to feed voraciously. These included some globally threatened species such as the Chinese Egret, Asian Dowitcher, Nordmann's Greenshank and Spoon-billed Sandpiper. Stints, sandpipers and plovers could be seen by the droves on the mudflats while scores of egrets and herons were to be observed feeding in the estuary, grasslands and ponds.

Such amazing sights have disappeared, extinct since the habitat was destroyed in order to create a rubbish dump. All that remains are remnant riverine mangroves, two small ponds and bits of grassland. Reclamation and solid waste dumping put paid to one of our richest bird sites. Although both the density and diversity of birds here had declined drastically, it is still the only home of the nationally threatened Little Grebe. There are less than 10 birds now eking out a tenuous and temporary existence.

Today we have concrete Canals, and our important mangrove is dwindling in numbers and in poor condition. If you visit many of the botanical gardens, reservoirs and beaches in Singapore, you will find very little wildlife and even insects... As there is general fogging done to get rid of mosquitoes and other pests.

b) Coastal areas.

With Singapore's #1 port of the world, the shoreline is filled with ships. From time to time, Ships leak and you can see "colorful" oil floating on the water. Less than 5% of the original mangroves is left and mostly in the north of Singapore in a much degraded state.

Much of Singapore's coast is reclaimed, the loss in biodiversity is tremendous. In addition to the losses in birds, crustaceans, molluscs and corals have also been depleted.

With the introduction of Ponggol as a residential area, many of the wetlands and forest are removed and are now condos and apartment blocks. In Sembawang, the jetty area that was full of wildlife is all built up. Using Google maps, you can clearly see how much of the coastal areas are built up now.

2) Burning trash for Energy

At a glance, this solves a lot of problems for a small island state. All your trash becomes fuel to power your city.

"Singaporeans understand and accept that because land is scarce, incineration is one of the most cost effective ways of waste disposal, as it can reduce the volume of waste by up to 90 percent," the NEA said in a statement.

"We actually generate power. The plants produce two to three percent of the total power generated in Singapore."

Indeed, Singaporeans do not have any choice as public opinions are rarely seeked, or rather, acted upon.

Incineration does not really make the waste disappear, it transforms the problem into a formidable pollution problem. This is the one of the reasons why neighboring countries like Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia do not burn all their trash. It creates dioxins where none existed before. Dioxin is known to increase rates of cancer growth... An incinerator is a major contributor to a whole range of major health problems

3) Recycling.

I'm not sure how the government got the statistics in the above diagram as I've lived in private landed properties, condominium blocks and HDB flats before. And often, I see a lot of "recycling" but hardly ever done right. I'm sure the diagram can be true for businesses, but hardly true for residents.

With about 80% or more residents living in high rise buildings, they all have one thing in common: The rubbish chute.

This makes throwing things away easy. With Singapore's favorite pass time as shopping, everyday, lots of packaging gets thrown away in the bin. As you know one of the most commonly thrown away thing is the plastic bag, and even though there is a drive to use reusable bags, I could hardly see anyone bring their own.

I personally own many shopping bags, but when I go shopping with my mom, her mindset was still, if there are free plastic bags, we should take and use it to throw trash. And somehow even when I tried to educate her, she would put plastic bags filled with groceries into the shopping bag.

Singapore talks a lot about recycling, but with the low cost of rubbish removal, and lack of incentive for recycling, most people do not see, to care. The recycle bins that are located near flats are often full and even the ones in Orchard road seemed to be filled with other trash, and contaminated with food.

I'm sure people do recycle, but if not done properly, most recycled items are not recycled as they are contaminated. In essence, most wastes, recycled or non-recycled ends up incinerated and going to the only landfill we have.

Incinerated waste do not magically disappear.

The current lifestyle of Singaporean is not sustainable, and what's worse, the hard truths are not shared, making people think that they are doing the right thing.

-----------------------------------------------------

There are a few things that come to mind.

1) Sending school children to work at recycling plants will educate them on the REAL recycling process and what is recycled, and the right way to recycle. In turn, they can teach their parents and kids in the future.

2) Waste collection should not be a "low class" Job. Creative solutions can help make the country more sustainable, but it requires creativity and innovation. Having a "positive image" and good salary does help attract talents to this important field.

3) Accessibility. Recycling bins should be easily accessible and perhaps, the chute should be used for ONLY recyclable materials, and the other non-recyclable materials have to be disposed off in a bin at the base of the building. This might encourage more recycling and less throwing away in the trash. A use of a camera to record everytime the chute is open and a fine of improper use of the recycle chute would reduce people from throwing trash in the recycle bins.

4) Lottery. Perhaps, rag-a-bone man can give out lottery tickets to encourage proper recycling. Besides collecting the recycled materials, they can give out a once a month "lucky draw" ticket if the items are properly recycled to promote the proper recycling.

Being a small city state, I think sustainability should be a key and would play a major role for any developed city to remain competitive. With the increase of population, education will be key to a more sustainable and greener future.

-- Robin Low

Holiday Season is here.

Hey folks,

The holiday season is here again.

We have a lot of Vitesse in Stock and they are simply fantastic.

Vitesse contains Coolmax, which is one of the best materials for wicking moisture. There are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body’s pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin or your body’s cells ignore the insulin. Between 90% and 95% of people who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Why do diabetes patients have to worry more about their feet?

Very often, people who have diabetes have poor blood circulation in their feet. This causes blisters and sores to heal very slowly. The poor circulation also causes the loss of feeling on their feet.

The loss of feeling in the feet can make it hard for them to tell if they have a blister or sore. If little sores aren't taken care of, they can get worse and turn into ulcers (serious, deep sores). If these ulcers become infected, they may have to go to the hospital or, in very serious cases, have a foot amputated (removed).

Footcare is of utmost importance, as the loss of mobility is very detrimental to the health of a diabetes patient.

How can a person with diabetes avoid problems with their feet?

Keep the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible. Also, follow the doctor's advice on diet and exercise. Take insulin or medicine exactly as prescribed. Here are some other ways to protect the feet:

Wash your feet every day with lukewarm (not hot) water and mild soap or a salt bath.
Dry your feet well, especially between the toes. Use a soft towel and pat gently; don't rub.
Keep the skin of your feet smooth by applying moisturizing cream, especially on the heels. If the skin is cracked, talk to your doctor about how to treat it.
Keep your feet dry by dusting them with nonmedicated powder before putting on shoes, socks or stockings.
Check your feet every day. You may need a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet. Call your doctor if you have redness, swelling, pain that doesn't go away, numbness or tingling in any part of your foot.
Don't treat calluses, corns or bunions without talking to your doctor first.
Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. It might help to soak your toenails in warm water to soften them before you cut them. File the edges of your toenails carefully.
Don't let your feet get too hot or too cold.
Don't go barefoot.
When choosing socks, pick socks that are cushioning, antibacterial and wicks moisture.

What should I look for when choosing shoes and socks?

Don't wear shoes without socks.
Don't wear sandals or other open-toed shoes.
Avoid high-heeled shoes and shoes with pointed toes.
Wear well-padded socks or stockings that are 1/2 inch longer than your longest toe. Don't wear stretch socks, nylon socks, socks with an elastic band or garter at the top, or socks with inside seams.
Don't wear uncomfortable or tight shoes that rub or cut into your feet. If you've had problems before because of shoes that didn't fit, you may want to be fitted for a custom-molded shoe.
Talk to your doctor before you buy special shoes or inserts.
Shop for new shoes at the end of the day when your feet are a little swollen. If shoes are comfortable when your feet are swollen, they'll probably be comfortable all day.
Get Antibacterial socks that wicks moisture and cushions, (e.g. Mayheim)
Break in new shoes slowly by wearing them for no more than an hour a day for several days.
Change socks and shoes every day. Have at least 2 pairs of shoes so you can switch pairs every other day.
Look inside your shoes every day for things like gravel or torn linings. These things could rub against your feet and cause blisters or sores.

-- Robin Low

New batch of Blitz arrives for Summer!

New Batch of Blitz arrives at Greenyarn.

We have a new special offer for Greenyarn Customers.

For the month of June, for any purchase above $20, a free pair of Blitz will be given out free (While stocks last!) When confronted with a a problem, each unit solves it with self initiative without waiting to be told what to do, and when unable to do so, relays the need and enables others to help.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

We hope to help businesses start again, and the affected areas return to normal soon.

-- Robin Low

A total of 5 dozen Vitesse, 10 Eco-fabric shirts and 50 Eco-fabric underwears were given out

Aid for Japan

Greenyarn is going to Japan.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It now carries more, while using less fuel and also has significantly lower CO2 emissions. This is a van designed to suit today’s tough economic climate.

Today, as Europe moves towards Euro V and Euro VI standards, a lot of vehicles ranging from motorcycles to Vans are getting a more efficient and cleaner engine. The petrol operators are forced to have cleaner fuels so the vehicles are more efficient and fuel saving, and less polluting.

Why does a country not adopt the Euro IV standard? (even when all vans and most vehicles sold now are up to Euro IV standard)

Why not?
In developing countries, large oil companies do play a big role in the economy, and getting them to change their equipment and delivering cleaner fuels cost more money.

The fuels may cost more and hence cost inflation is often an argument, but coupled with more efficient vehicles, the vehicles go a further distance and pollute less.

In Singapore, even Euro IV is not adopted. Does Moist+ 2 contain these ingredients?

Answer: Here is an ingredient list of Moist+ 2 Facial Mask:
Rose Hip Oil , Marine collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate, Extracts of Matricaria, Bamboo Charcoal, Mulberry bark, Sea Weed Extract, Perilla Extract, Carbopol, Butylene Glycol, Methylparaben, Distilled water.

I don't see PARABENS and PHENOXYETHANOL but there is Methylparaben on the list.

Moist+ 2 is made and sold in Japan, and MethylParaben is unlike PARABENS and PHENOXYETHANOL.

Like the popular SK-II Facial Masks, Methylparaben is one of the ingredients, and is used in skincare and beauty projects for rejuvenation purposes.

Methylparaben is produced naturally and found in several fruits, primarily blueberries, along with other parabens. There is no evidence that methylparaben or propylparabens are harmful at concentrations typically used in body care or cosmetics. Methyl and propylparabens are considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for food and cosmetic antibacterial preservation. Methylparaben is readily metabolized by common soil bacteria, making it completely biodegradable.

We do not have any reported case of allergies to Moist+ 2 yet, and we have full confidence and trust in our products.

-- Robin Low

Here are some information regarding Methylparaben from other web sites and you may want to take a look:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylparaben
http://www.ehow.com/about_4691068_what-is-methylparaben.html

Moist+ 2, new batch is here again.

Moist+™ 2 is a relaxing at-home facial treatment for vibrant, soft and silky-smooth skin. It is an anti-fungal and very commonly used as a preservative for cosmetics, drugs and food items. It functions as a preservative as well as a bacteriostatic agent. Methylparaben is extracted from the benzoic acid that is derived from benzoin tree gum. It is considered both to be a phenol as well as an ester. A lot of times, methylparaben is used in skincare and beauty projects for rejuvenation purposes.

Methylparaben is considered to be a safe substance. It is easily absorbed through both the skin as well as through the gastrointestinal tract. It quickly is excreted and eliminated without any building up inside of the body. It is non-toxic by parenteral and oral consumption. It works well with sensitive skin types and is gentle and non-irritating.

Best Socks in the Market

A recent poll from Greenyarn customers in July - August 2010 reveals that out of 200 customers surveyed, the 78 customers that responded ALL claim that Greenyarn socks are the most comfortable and durable socks that they have worn.

Here is the breakdown of the socks that they are wearing.

Short Socks / Blitz - 23
Mid Cut Socks / Vitesse - 10
Short Plus Socks / Sole-R - 17
Half Cut Socks / Mayheim Socks - 14
Hiking Socks / Tyrrano - 14

Many people do not believe in durability and comfort on the same product. They do not expect soft and comfortable socks with a cushioning sole to be that durable, but Greenyarn's range of socks has proven many of the customers wrong.

Anne bought these 4 pairs of socks back in 2006, and has worn them everyday (changing and washing everyday) and recently in 2010, she returned and bought 6 more pairs.

Her socks simply lasted very long, with the elasticity still intact for more than 4 years. She decided to upgrade to the newer models that were out, and could not use regular socks anymore as she is accustomed to the kind of cushioning and comfort level these socks provide.

Nick bought 2 pairs in 2007 because of foot fungus problem and many of his friends told him that his feet smell bad. But after using the socks for a year, his athletes foot problem went away. He recently bought more socks because he lost a pair in the laundry, and realized that he got blisters from other branded socks when he did his long distance running, something he had never gotten when he was wearing the Greenyarn Eco-fabric socks. He bought 4 pairs of Tyrrano as he was planning for a hiking trip on the West Coast.

Jim, a Boston Police Officer wore Greenyarn Eco-fabric Half Cut Socks for work everyday for the past 4 years. When his wife threw his 4 year old socks away and bought some new ones, he immediately realized the difference when he put on the new socks and at the end of his shift, he developed some blisters in his motorcycle boots. Jim immediately bought 6 more pairs and decided not to wear regular socks again.

"Many people though socks were just socks until they put on some Greenyarn socks." Navin Weeraratne said. "Once you start wearing them, it is hard to go back to regular socks as they are so cushioning and comfortable!"

-- Robin Low

Smart Underwear, Great Traveling Companion

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m2WkAdRqxxE/TH0whwSFj8I/AAAAAAAAAJc/cAkNjYxKYLA/s400/A-065.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511614875425935298" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_m2WkAdRqxxE/TH0rf-oSyKI/AAAAAAAAAJU/Prc8qc3MKS0/s400/A-065B.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511609347359295650" />

Greenyarn has developed a seamless wicking underwear containing Eco-fabric and lycra, and is both comfortable and quick-drying.

Many people do not think much about their underwear, and ladies especially love bright colored underwear with pretty designs, however, recently I have got a lot of compliments on the new Smart Underwear containing Eco-fabric on their wearability and comfort.

Friends and family who own these underwear WILL wear them when going on long trips as their comfort is second to none.

Recently, I got onto a plane for a long flight, a lay over, and got stuck at the airport for more than 12 hours. The whole journey took more than 30 hours, and of course, I did not change my underwear for more than a day! Unfortunately for me, I was returning home, and as I did not bring enough Eco-fabric smart underwear for the trip, I actually bought some regular underwear.

As a result of the long trip without the smart underwear, I got some acne where the elastic band was located as I have taken for granted that all underwear should have a breathable waistband. The constriction of the elastic band caused markings on my body, and eventually, I developed acnes around my waist. The branded underwear did not wick moisture as well as the Eco-fabric underwear, and I got some rashes as well. Scratching the itchy parts also gave me abrasions, and I WILL never forget this experience, and WILL always bring along lots of Eco-fabric underwear whenever I travel.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have sensitive skin like me, I would strongly suggest you to try out these smartunderwear containing Eco-fabric. These seamless underwear are soft, and they conform to your body contours, making you not feel them at all.

These smart underwear contains nano-particles of bamboo charcoal that makes them anitbacterial, deodorizing, absorbing and emitting of far infrared energy, and static free. As the nano-particles are embedded in the material, the benefits from this underwear will not diminish even after repeated washes.

These smart underwear are antibacterial, deodorizing, absorbs and emits far infrared energy, does not generate static electricity and washable. As the bamboo charcoal particles are embedded in the fiber and not coated, the benefits of the briefs will not diminish even after repeated washes. The benefits come from the bamboo charcoal particles and not from added chemicals.

There is strict quality assurance on these products and no dyes are added during manufacturing.

Try them, I highly recommend them.

-- Robin Low
CEO, Greenyarn LLC
